I have three beautiful girls that are always learning and growing into new phases in their lives. At the time of this writing, Our girls are out of school for the summer and will be starting school in August again. As they begin to go into their respective grades, it always reminds me that there are going to be papers coming home, report cards to be reviewed, and meetings to go to. Each of our girls is bright and I know we will have no problem with their report cards. I do know, with their personality that we have to consistently work on this one thing; the love of a father is not contingent on whether you do good or bad.
Let that last phrase sink in for a moment. I will take a drink of my coffee just so you have a moment to let it sink in….
Alright, now that you have let it sink in let us move forward. God’s love is not contingent on whether you are a good or bad person. In Romans 5:8 (NIV) “But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” That statement alone reflects God’s love for the world and not just for the Christian. When I think about that, I am led to John 3:16-17 that says “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him.” God sent His Son while we were still sinners!
I had this revelation after a moment in my life where I felt completely condemned. It was really stupid of me to feel the way I felt yet I did. I was led to Hebrews 10:17-18 where Paul was writing about the prophecy of Christ and the fulfillment; ” Then he adds: ‘Their sins and lawless acts I will remember no more.’ And where these have been forgiven, sacrifice for sin is no longer necessary.” This is a powerful statement. Once Christ died for the sins of the world…it was done! I will not go to heaven and have God with a checklist of things I have or have not done. The sacrifice was made, the blood paid the price, and God does not remember your sins anymore! This doesn’t give you a license to sin but gives you a license of grace when you fall into sin. It doesn’t give you permission to willingly go against God’s word but when you are found in that place and ask for God’s help, He will give it to you! Your sins He remembers them no more! You can’t read that without wanting to shout no matter what denomination you are in.
As a father, I have to constantly remind myself of this truth. When any of my girls “fall short of the line”, I can’t keep bringing it up after it has been addressed. Just as our Heavenly Father, I have to drop it and let it go once it has been addressed. I have to “remember it no more.” The good thing about this revelation is this; it releases me from the pressure of keeping a record of wrongs. It releases me from having to follow up and keep following up and… You get the picture.
Our love for our children doesn’t change because of what they do or do not do. The love of a parent isn’t contingent on the report indicators. It is because we love them for them just being them.
